QUASI-ISOTHERMAL EXPANSION ENGINE FOR CRYOGENIC AUTOMOTIVE PROPULSION

The potential of cryogenic energy storage for automotive propulsion as an alternative to the electrochemical batteries for zero-emission vehicles (ZEV).

This project “Quasi isothermal expansion for cryogenic automotive propulsion” is used in zero emission vehicles. It’s also assumed that using inert cryogen like liquid nitrogen as an energy storage material would limit the environmental damage.

It is anticipated that use of an inert cryogen, such as liquid nitrogen(LN2), as an energy storage would not pose any environmental burden, and in particular would avoid the issues of heavy metals pollution associated with lead-acid batteries.

Working:

In this project Quasi isothermal expansion for cryogenic automotive propulsion, the cryogenic fuel is stored in a vacuum jacketed container and has proper relief valves to accommodate safe boil off. A cryo-pump is employed to pressurize the fluid to a level above the injection pressure of expander. The shaft power from this expander is applied for vehicle propulsion.

To maintain the expander walls at ambient temperature, a warmant fluid is circulated. This warmant must be pumped through the heat exchanger system for efficient conduction of ambient heat into engine. A quasi isothermal reciprocating expander is designed and the output is transmitted to the wheels by transmission.

Conclusion:

The potential for making use of the available energy of liquid nitrogen for the purpose of automotive propulsion is very high. The heat transfer calculation of this quasi isothermal engine has a heart core which is embedded within the expansion chamber and nearly 85% of performance of ideal isothermal power cycle is obtained. Since this cryogenic fluid is non-polluting, it avoids heavy metal pollution linked with lead-acid batteries.

Furthermore, in this project the complete thermodynamic simulation of a reciprocating expander is studied. It has been developed to study the various engine designs and operational parameters of liquid Nitrogen consumption of this ambient powered automobile. Thus in steps, a reciprocating engine model along with piston cylinder heat transfer and piston ring friction mechanism is explained in detail.

CRYOGENIC ENGINE IN ROCKET PROPULSION

The CRYOGENIC ENGINE IN ROCKET PROPULSION has analyzed about many aspects and features of an automobile engine. It acts like a better reference to associated workers and practiced engineers. The exhaust brake is to aid in slowing down vehicles with diesel engines without the use of the wheel brakes.

Exhaust brakes include a character of doorway that gets closed when the vehicle moves and accelerator is not utilized then the doorway gets closed.

The major advantage is that the power gets added slowly into the regular brakes that avoid glazing and heating and reducing the productivity. The exhaust brake is not a braking system but maximizing duties of slowing and stopping.

The main method of I.C. Engines includes automobile systems to make the system to have the abilities of Exhaust Braking that are used for industrial purpose.

CONCLUSION:

The aim of this CRYOGENIC ENGINE IN ROCKET PROPULSION Mechanical Seminar Topic is to develop Automobile Engineering field. It maximizes practical knowledge which is required for the purpose of industrial engineering.

CRYOGENIC ROCKET ENGINE HYDROGEN FUEL SYSTEM

A cryogenic rocket engine is a rocket engine which utilizes a cryogenic fuel or oxidizer that implies fuel and oxidizer are liquefied gases stored at low temperatures. These engines were important factors for ultimate success to reach the Moon by the Saturn V rocket.

American and Soviet engineers discovered that rocket engines require high mass flow rate of fuel and oxidizer to generate a thrust in which oxygen and low molecular weight hydrocarbons used as fuel and oxidizer pair. Both are in gaseous state at room temperature and pressure. If propellants stored as pressurized gases then the size and mass of fuel tanks decrease efficiency of rocket to obtained the mass flow rate.

The combination of liquid hydrogen (LH2) fuel and liquid oxygen (LOX) oxidizer is widely used which are cheaply and easily available. It has the highest entropy released by combustion if burned.

Conclusion:

This CRYOGENIC ROCKET ENGINE HYDROGEN FUEL SYSTEM project concludes that the cryopumps are turbo pumps which are powered through gas turbines differentiated into a bypass flow configuration or main flow configuration.

DEEP SPACE COOLING TO ELIMINATE CRYOGENIC VENTING

PROBLEM: Planning for long duration exploration missions has identified the loss of cryogenic gases due to boil-off as an area where technology improvements could provide a significant improvement in reducing the mass required for such missions. Venting of the boil-off is required to keep pressures in cryogenic storage tanks from exceeding tank pressure limits.

This process is driven by the heating of the tank and its cryogenic fluid contents. Deep space missions that are in planning for exploration require the long duration storage of cryogenic propellants to accomplish the missions. It is anticipated that the entire set of propulsion system tanks can’t be kept at temperatures that would keep propellants from needing to vent boil-off gas. Deep space missions have the intrinsic nature of having access to deep space viewing and thus the possibility of rejecting heat to a very cold sink.

The approach advocated in this project is to demonstrate that cryogenic propellant can be passively cooled (using a low temperature heat sink instead of compression cooling cycles) to temperatures that would eliminate the need to vent propellant. Thus the loss of propellants during the mission would be
avoided.

A Project Report on Cryogenic Grinding:

Cryogenic grinding technology can efficiently grind most tough materials and can also facilitate Cryogenic recycling of tough composite materials and multi component scrap. The heart of this technology is the CRYO-GRIND SYSTEM. It employs a cryogenic process to embrittle and grind materials to achieve consistent particle size for a wide range of products. The cryogenic process also has a unique capability for recycling difficult to separate composite materials...
